UNITA'S REFLECTIONS ON THE MUSIC

"There was a time in my life when I felt like a lost ship at sea", says Unita. "It was a time that would be the beginning of much soul searching and reflection. I had experienced all within a short period of time, many losses in my life, including the heartbreaking death of my Father. I started questioning my reason for being here on this earth." Fortunately, Unita's soul searching brought her back to her love of music and poetry. "The healing began when I allowed myself to go back to my heart's desire and revisit the things I loved most in my life. Music was always in our house, and writing poetry and songs and singing was always a part of my everyday existence." This time of healing also brought back memories of how Unita's father, who was a musician, had influenced her. "His legacy to me was far more than his love of music. I will always remember the day when I was a young girl, and the family was sitting in church, when my father walked out in his white choir robe singing with the choir. He had a solo part, and when he started singing I was stunned at the beauty of his voice. It was the voice of an angel. It brought tears to my eyes as I sat there and wondered how that voice could possibly be coming out of my father. I decided right then and there that I wanted to sing like him, and hopefully move others the way I had been moved. Fortunately for me I have been blessed with my father's voice, as though it was always meant to be that I would carry on." Losing her father to heart disease years later nearly broke Unita's heart, but not her spirit. "When I sing, I feel my father's spirit gently guiding me through the notes. There is no other feeling like it in the world. "

Unita's music background lends itself to many styles of music. When "Through the Veils" was conceived it was after years of writing and dreaming of making her own CD of original songs. "I have many kinds of lyrics and music inside my head, but the music that was coming through me at this time was all about the divine, heavenly, earthly, and everything in between. I think it was a time when I was open to music that would inspire others to discover the love and light that is inherent in all of us. I also felt it was time to do something to honor the memory of a magical (or celestial?) visit I experienced as a child that I believe saved my life. When I was only five years old I almost died of a serious illness, one that has left me with a slight heart murmur to this day. An "Angel" came to me every day and sang to me, and sometimes we would sing together. I never questioned this being, I just knew that when we sang together, I was no longer frightened. When I was well again, he was gone. Was this real or just a child's imagination? To this day I believe it was real, and over the years I'v had other similar experiences that keep me believing. I know in my heart of hearts that it was a gift that allowed me to stay in this world a little longer, to grow up with the knowledge that we are not alone, and to be able to write and sing from a special place in my heart that keeps that cherished memory alive. Without it, I don't think I would have been able to keep my dreams alive, or to have created and continue to create the music that finds itself being heard all over the world. I didn't see that part coming, and I still have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure I'm not dreaming. I know that I'm not finished yet and there is still so much more music to come."

Unita says that celebrating the divine through music is only part of it. "I am blessed in so many ways. I have a loving and supportive family, wonderful and treasured friends, and a life that is full and rich beyond any monetary value. I believe we all have choices, and my choice is to live a life that makes a difference. I want to give something back and know that the people I love can be proud of who I am and how I live my life. My mother who was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's, is someone who inspires me to be the best person I can be, and I wouldn't want to disappoint her."

Unita truly believes that we are all spiritual beings having a human experience. "We have been given the most beautiful gift. The love and light that is within us from the time we are born is meant to be shared with others, and I believe the more we honor that, the closer we are to finding our own peace and joy in this world. Today, this moment, is our journey through the veils between heaven and earth. Speaking for myself, when I am finally home, I want to know that I have left behind my own legacy of love. My father would like that."

Unita has been featured on two of International recording artist Herb Ernst's albums, Bringers of the Dawn and Angels & Ecstasy, and her partner Joseph Akins's release Keys to the Heart. Through The Veils also features the impressive talents of Joseph and Herb as co-producers, co-writers and keyboardists on the album. Unita's friend, harpist Peter Sterling has a guest appearance. This album is a blend of keyboards, strings, harp, layered vocals and inspiring lyrics of love, hope, dreams and angels. In a style compared to Enya and Loreena McKennitt, Through The Veils will take you on an intimate journey of the heart that will linger on long after the last notes are heard. Hear the voice. The Songs

  1. Love is the Light

This song was originally written on my guitar years ago when I first realized that my music was changing along with an awareness of connecting with a higher source. The melody kept repeating itself in my head over and over. With Joseph's guidance and talent, it evolved into this heavenly chant from, and for, the angels.

  2. Sweet Ellyon

Some friends of ours named their first child Ellyon Elestial, and I thought that was the most beautiful angel name I had ever heard. In honor of this precious new life, I wanted to write a song of hope that would be sprinkled with some magic and a little angel dust. The music was already an instrumental on Joseph's album "Keys to the Heart", and it seemed natural to write lyrics to such a beautiful melody.

  3. Father's Dream

My father was a dreamer, and a musician whose legacy to me was not only his love of music, but his gift of an angelic singing voice. It broke my heart when he passed over, but his spirit lives on in every song I sing. When I wrote these lyrics I took them to my friend Herb Ernst and asked him to help me with the music. It was a wonderful experience to share something so personal with someone with his gentle spirit and enormous talent. This song took eleven years to come to fruition, and I know my father is smiling that famous smile of his and glad that I finally got on with it.

  4. In My Garden

I had a "dream" one night that I was walking in a beautiful rose garden, surrounded by beautiful angelic statues. I was feeling sad and I felt I was being watched. One of the angel statues turned into this beautiful light being and spoke to me with such love. It was a powerful message, reminding me that we're never alone, and that love is always around us. It was so touching and very real. When I woke up the next morning the lyrics came immediately. A few weeks later, Joseph was playing some beautiful new music on the piano and I found the lyrics I had written and started to sing with him. They fit perfectly. We both feel this was a lovely gift to us, and a very special song. My friend and talented harpist Peter Sterling graciously agreed to play his harp on this song, which enhances our beautiful creation in just the right, angelic way.

  5. Song of the Rose

I fell in love with this music from my friend Herb Ernst's "Dreamflight Trilogy" and was inspired to write some lyrics. Roses have always been a symbol of love and renewal for me, and the lyrics came easily as they wove into a song of my awakening spirituality. I was thrilled when Herb said I could put this song on "Through The Veils".

  6. Magic Love

Herb sent me this music to see if I wanted to write some lyrics. I was stunned with it's beauty and moved to tears when I heard it, knowing at once it was a song of love from the most beautiful of hearts. I found myself singing from the depths of my soul before the words ever found their home. When the lyrics did come, it was as if they had always been waiting for the right voice and music to give them life. It was a magical experience.

  7. Reminds Me Of A Dream

Joseph and I were approached to write the soundtrack for an independent film for a writer/director friend of ours. This was something we had always wanted to do. One of the most important songs needed to be the love song, and I always love to write love songs. After reading the script, I sat down with my guitar and "Reminds Me Of A Dream" was born. Together with Joseph's composing vision and brilliant piano skills, we created this haunting love song that became the director's favorite, and a major high point in the movie.

  8. The Dove's Cry

I wrote these lyrics about a year before the music. Again, I asked for Herb's assistance on this one and as always, his brilliance as a composer and keyboardist comes through in this music. With Joseph's guidance and beautiful additions on keyboards, I feel we produced together a magnificent piece of music. I am proud to include this song of hope and peace for mankind, my one "statement" song, on the album.

  9. Sadhana (A Path to Love)

Joseph and I were taking a vacation on an island one summer, and the friend we were staying with happened to have a baby grand piano in her living room. We were both reading Deepak Chopra's book, "A Path To Love" ( which in sanskrit is "Sadhana"), and inspiration was rampant. With the ocean next to us and words of beauty and wisdom lovingly filling our hearts, it was only natural to bring a new song to life. Joseph's fingers had a life of their own when he sat at the baby grand, and as always, spirit was there to guide us, effortless, smooth and a soothing invitation to create our own path to love.

  10. Through the Veils

A very special friend of mine is an artist who paints angels, and when he created a painting of extraordinary beauty titled "Through the Veils", I knew it was special. In the painting, beautiful light beings are emerging from veils of light, and it struck me that this was how I had always envisioned the inevitable meeting between us and our God and angels. It also spoke to me of our journey between heaven and earth, where with each life experience, the veils are lifted to reveal our own truth. When I knew that I would be producing an album of music celebrating the divine, there was no question in my mind what the title would be. This song is my gift of thanks to the beloved ones who guide us and watch over us all. It is also a song of hope for humankind.
