Long after Calvin Akins couldn't remember his telephone number or what day it was, he still enjoyed music. After he lost his ability to walk and pick a guitar, he could still sway and sing to the melodies played on the family piano. So his son Joseph would perform mini concerts for him. He composed many songs, and played them and other pieces to entertain and soothe his father, who was battling Alzheimer's disease. His father died on December 19,1994.
To honor his father, Mr. Akins has produced Keys to the Heart. "My father loved music." It was painful to watch his father's mental, emotional and physical decline over a three-year period. The experience changed him and his music. "It affected me in so many ways. Writing the songs was therapeutic for me. I did it just as much for me and my family as my father. Now I appreciate the healing power of music and I want to help people. My goal is to write music to inspire, move emotions and bring joy to people's lives. This is what I pray for before composing."
Joseph is an accomplished jazz pianist with a versatile background of musical styles and a wide variety of influences from Mozart to Coltrane to Yanni. Keys To The Heart features the impressive talents of Unita on vocals and lyrics, Wiz on flutes, Ken Cardillo on classical guitar and Bob Stagner (Shaking Ray Levi) on Middle Eastern dumbek, hindu bell and other exotic percussion. This album reflects Soft Jazz, New Age and Contemporary styles. Keys To The Heart is an experience of musical textures that soothe and inspire.
People have asked me many times, "How did the piano get in the field?" Well...I can promise you it was NOT with a computer. Maybe it got there this way!
